I have a dog for a week and want to take him to the beach, and naturally you were the first person I thought of to ask for advice about good dog beaches - any thoughts? Thanks very much!!

Thanks for thinking of me! Unfortunately, in our area I don't know of any beaches that allow dogs during summer. Some allow dogs October to April, some September to June. We've more or less given up on taking our dogs to salt water.

Fresh water swimmin' holes are another matter altogether, and there are a great many of them. Our favorite is Ward's Pond in Jamaica Plain, but Callahan State Park (Framingham?) is very popular with dog people, as is Cutler Park in Needham. Dogtown in Glouster is a great joy for many reasons (see my Dogtown tag on the left) but is a long hour from Boston and will be pretty mosquitoey this time of year.

I hope this helps! Have fun with your temporary dog and feel free to ask me more questions!

Oh, maybe I should've mentioned that I have a car to put the dog into, so I don't have to stick around our area if I don't want to. I'll actually be *in* Needham so I will make it a point to get us out to Cutler park.

I actually took him out to Dogtown in the winter and we had a blast! I can't wait til I have the time/space for a dog of my own, instead of an occasional one.

BTW, your bailiwick trip sounds awesome. Hope you all have fun!
