If you're a mastodon! Apparently you can eat the flowers and the pulp, but I haven't found any practical advice on doing so.

supposedly the pulp around the seeds is edible by a number of mammals (including people), is used for various things around the world, including beer.

will google more extensively later - i never looked into it deeply as all i seem to have around here are black locust. and thorns (bad for mtn bikes)...
