20 years ago, where I live was primarily a farming city. Thankfully, the poultry and livestock restrictions are still pretty lax compared to most cities in North Texas. I have people ask me all the time "is that legal?!" when they hear about my hens (and now goats). (I don't even have many, but people act like more than none is too many.) Most of those same people are surprised when they realize that the hens aren't smelly or noisy.
As a whole, Americans have gotten so removed from domesticated livestock that people have blown the negatives way out of proportion.
