Not too long ago there was this meme/trend on LJ and the rest of the internet but especially LJ about calling people out about "Privilege." I didn't really get it--I mean I kind of got it--I know that first worlders, North Americans, white people, middle class people, men, basically anyone who looks like/is descended from the people who hold most of the power in the world have an easier time in life, in general. I mean, I get that. But I didn't get what I was supposed to do about it. And most of those memes were so humorless and mean mean spirited that even a lefty bleeding heart sensitive white guy like myself felt pretty put off by it all.

Anyway, I've spent the last hour reading yoisthisracist.com and I feel like it carries the message(s) a little better, and I highly recommend reading it, whether or not you are racist.

I think the buzzword enjoyed by isolationists is "entitlement".

"White history month". 9_9 Really, now. What's next? Cis pride parades? Men's Night at the golf club? Movements to render Hispanics and Muslims invisible?

When I was a kid I got mad when I overheard my friend telling my sister about being picked on at school because she was the only black kid. I got mad because she told my older sister and not me. I heard her say, "She's too young to understand."

I was. But she wasn't. We were the same age.

Another friend had her arm broken when knocked to the ground. Three bigger white boys called her a "Packie". She was just a girl. She didn't know what a "Packie" was and neither did they, but whatever it was, they weren't one and she was.

It took me longer than it should have to understand.

I meet my former sort of ignorance when white people speak against the school here in Toronto (that has a waiting list) for black kids with a ciriculum augmented with history and information that the regular ciriculum ignores.

I think the website yothisisrasist.com is brilliant and really patient with us dumb rednecks considering how ignorant we are.

I thought all the history we learned (or at least all the history I learned in school) was white history. I never saw any of the meme things you were talking about. I am not very active on LJ, and I think all my LJ friends are white anyway.
