Wait,

What was it about the millipede picture that disturbed people?

...um, the HORRIFYING MILLIPEDES.

I had to scroll on by real quick, myself.

I found the inclusion of millipedes somewhat disturbing. The very existence of millipedes squicks me in and of itself. Just sayin'.

I have no idea, except that it's a close-up photo of arthropods, like so many others you've posted. Personally, I think millipedes can be kind of cute; house centipedes and your photos of them creep me out much more (no pun intended), by an order of magnitude. It's the length of the legs.

number of millipedes x number of legs per millipede = yikes!

Shrugs - Not sure, but it may have been something like this...

I first went Ooooo Cooool, Millipedes, and now I know the name of that particular species! Rock on!

Then I went, "But man, that shot is kind of creepy in an odd way, So many of them in one spot, I don't see that down here... wiiiieeeeerd."

Then my brain flipped back and went: "Cooool! Millipedes"

I like millipedes. They are strange creatures. I like strange.

At first glance it looks like a mouth filled with awful sharp pointy teeth :)

[identity profile] audacian.livejournal.com 2012-06-18 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, they're gross?

[identity profile] miz-geek.livejournal.com 2012-06-18 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Many people find snakes and insects kind of creepy. Millipedes sort of combine the creepiest parts of both (at least visually - yes, I know they aren't tiny little snakes with lots of legs).

I thought it was a really cool shot.

Don't know. I think they're cool. (Says the one who has a picture or her holding the giant millipede at the Insectarium.)

[identity profile] jostajam.livejournal.com 2012-06-18 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
My 11 year old brought home ALL the millipedes his class had been studying. They're happily living in his terrarium, so no problem here. People have reacted negatively to photos of our millipedes too.

[identity profile] kryptyd.livejournal.com 2012-06-18 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It's because they look like they're all clustering around a letterbox, trying to get in.

[identity profile] badnoodles.livejournal.com 2012-06-18 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I really to think it's the number of legs. Two legs best, four legs good, six legs okay, eight legs ick, centi-legs ew, and milli-legs OMG BURN IT WITH FIRE.

The only thing I could think about was that nasty smell when there are a lot of millipedes around. Why do they smell like that?

[identity profile] deathling.livejournal.com 2012-06-19 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
It's the legs. One set is ok, but like 8 are just too many.

[identity profile] uneko.livejournal.com 2012-06-19 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
because they're SWARMING on a thing. and it's not too hard to envision that something being somewhere you might casually put one's hand and end up in a hand covered in multi-legged horrors or squashed millipedes XD

[identity profile] karenleigh.livejournal.com 2012-06-19 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
No creature should have more than 8 legs!

[identity profile] urbpan.livejournal.com 2012-06-19 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, I've never noticed! I certainly didn't notice in this case since I had my nose about a foot above the surface of the compost. I imagine lots of any animal could result in a distinctive smell. Cockroaches and crickets certainly are distinctive. Millipedes have chemical defenses, so it would make sense that they would have an odor too.

What's it like?

[identity profile] iheartoothecae.livejournal.com 2012-06-19 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I missed the post, but I went back and tacked on some millipede love. I think they're adorable, and I still mourn the loss of my pet Orthoporus ornatus. Her name was Nellipede (or The Nellipede, in formal situations), named after the professor who gave her to me (Dr. Nelson).

Srsly they are like the most harmless things ever. They don't bite. They don't sting. Their only defense is leaking, and I know from having pestered a lot of millipedes in my time, you frequently have to convince them even that is worth the effort. Sure they have a lot of legs, but what are they going to do, walk on you to death? OOH SCARY.

I think people are secretly intimidated by critters with more than four legs because they know that if there were ever a nature-wide tap-dancing competition, humans would be booed offstage in the first round.

I will be quoting you in my first podcast.

Hmmm - kind of hard to describe. The only thing that comes to mind is it smells like a whole bunch of scabs.

Haha, awesome. :D

Personally both the millipedes and the slug were disgusting, but nature often is :-)
