I have no idea, except that it's a close-up photo of arthropods, like so many others you've posted. Personally, I think millipedes can be kind of cute; house centipedes and your photos of them creep me out much more (no pun intended), by an order of magnitude. It's the length of the legs.
Many people find snakes and insects kind of creepy. Millipedes sort of combine the creepiest parts of both (at least visually - yes, I know they aren't tiny little snakes with lots of legs).
My 11 year old brought home ALL the millipedes his class had been studying. They're happily living in his terrarium, so no problem here. People have reacted negatively to photos of our millipedes too.
I really to think it's the number of legs. Two legs best, four legs good, six legs okay, eight legs ick, centi-legs ew, and milli-legs OMG BURN IT WITH FIRE.
because they're SWARMING on a thing. and it's not too hard to envision that something being somewhere you might casually put one's hand and end up in a hand covered in multi-legged horrors or squashed millipedes XD
Huh, I've never noticed! I certainly didn't notice in this case since I had my nose about a foot above the surface of the compost. I imagine lots of any animal could result in a distinctive smell. Cockroaches and crickets certainly are distinctive. Millipedes have chemical defenses, so it would make sense that they would have an odor too.
I missed the post, but I went back and tacked on some millipede love. I think they're adorable, and I still mourn the loss of my pet Orthoporus ornatus. Her name was Nellipede (or The Nellipede, in formal situations), named after the professor who gave her to me (Dr. Nelson).
Srsly they are like the most harmless things ever. They don't bite. They don't sting. Their only defense is leaking, and I know from having pestered a lot of millipedes in my time, you frequently have to convince them even that is worth the effort. Sure they have a lot of legs, but what are they going to do, walk on you to death? OOH SCARY.
I think people are secretly intimidated by critters with more than four legs because they know that if there were ever a nature-wide tap-dancing competition, humans would be booed offstage in the first round.
milliways
i thought it was cute?

Shrugs - Not sure, but it may have been something like this...
Then I went, "But man, that shot is kind of creepy in an odd way, So many of them in one spot, I don't see that down here... wiiiieeeeerd."
Then my brain flipped back and went: "Cooool! Millipedes"
I like millipedes. They are strange creatures. I like strange.
