Today I got a message from bugguide.net that the fly in this post was indeed correctly identified as Merodon equestris the narcissus fly. The larva of this European fly feeds on daffodil bulbs, which is probably how it ended up in North America--via transatlantic bulb commerce. Almost every time I send an insect photo to bugguide for an identification I get one, complete with a withering criticism of my photographic abilities. I blame my camera.
