Baaaaaby animals

Hey look at all the new babies that appeared by our compost bin! I don't know what kind they are, but Alexis suggested that they might be cross orbweavers, which seems likely. In the spring last year we found a similar baby spider explosion, and there were a lot of cross orbweavers around.

Bugguide seems to agree that these are orb weavers of some kind. I guess we'll see if the fullness of summer brings us big beautiful spiders!

Wow! I always watch for the orb weaver egg sacs when I clean up the garden, and hang them on the grapevines for overwintering. I've never gone out to see when they hatch- now I will!
Love my garden spiders.

ack ack ack ack ack.

while these numbers are still TERRIFYING, i've gotta say that argiope are some of my LEAST hated spiders... Probably mostly due to the fact that their webs and colors are fascinating, you can generally see them BEFORE getting one smacked across your face, and I've yet to have one show up in my bed.

So should I post the pic I took today of me sticking my hand into the mass of baby spiders?

Orb Weavers! You are *so* lucky -- and I'm not being a bit sarcastic by saying that. I remember seeing them quite a bit when I was a kid, but haven't seen any in ages...
