3:00 snapshot #1418: dog phalluses, stunted by dryness

While doing my mushroom walk for the zoo staff, we came across a group of dog stinkhorns.

These had begun to emerge, during the rain early last week, then dried up with the weather.

Stinkhorns emerge from egg-like structures called, well, eggs.

Here's a split-open dog stinkhorn egg. Arguably this is Mutinus elegans, a close relative to M. caninus, pictured in my posts tagged dog stinkhorn.

Fascinating. There's something kinda artsy about them. The colors are amazing!

Pardon me, I believe I still have a post waiting for moderation at your community that I sent a PM about yesterday. Would it be possible to be given permission to post without awaiting moderation, as I see someone has posted since my previous request, and it gets trick for me to keep track of everything I do on LiveJournal (in conjunction with real life)?

I think you'll find your post has already passed through moderation.

I beg your pardon, as I may have lost track, did you not get a post with a hummingbird and a moth and dalias? That's the one I recall submitting.

Nope, haven't seen that one yet!

I know it bugs you when people are afraid of fungus, but these things look like horrible alien invaders.
