insect horror
Jun. 5th, 2004 05:25 pmGory sights are common in my line of work. One of my volunteers brought back the back half of a chipmunk, from the barred owl cage today, but that wasn't too bad.
No, the grisliest thing I saw today involved ants (and I won't let it influence my article decision). We have carpenter ants in the buildings here. I'm not bothered by them at all--on a coffee cup? Flick it off. etc. But we also have feeder crickets, to feed our frog. We had a little plastic container with about 2 dozen, purchased at a pet shop. I went to go get a cricket to feed the frog, and found ants. Dozens and dozens of ants. The carpenter ants had found their way into the cricket container and reduced the hapless inmates into pieces small enough to carry out. Out of over 40 crickets there was just a couple dead ones and the drifting dust of antennae and stray legs. Gave me the willies.
