Celebrity speaks frankly, Network scrambles for cover
"George Bush doesn't care about black people"
West also criticized the media's portrayal of blacks, saying: "I hate the way they portray us in the media. If you see a black family, it says they're looting. See a white family, it says they're looking for food."
Why is it that any time someone says something publicly that I agree with, they get in trouble?

Sep. 3rd, 2005 01:13 pmThis quote is from an article about the meeting between New Orleans Mayor Nagin and the President. Nagin's tirade on radio got president's attention The part that made my eyes bug out and spit involuntarily is bolded by me.
In their two hours together, first on Air Force One and then during a flyover of the city in the president's helicopter, Nagin said Bush did not mention the radio tirade until the mayor himself brought it up.
"I told him: 'I said some things yesterday that may have offended you, and if they did, I apologize. But if you were in my shoes, what would you do?' " Nagin said. "He said he had heard I had said some things, but that he really didn't understand all of it. And then he said: 'You and I are OK.' "

apparently lots of snakes, some crocs, dead rats, cats, dogs....hungry frightened dogs and cats, and, I have heard, fire ants grouping into balls in the water to avoid drowning...not pleasant to come in contact with...
By crocs, I assume the poster means American Alligators. To my knowledge, American crocodiles don't range to New Orleans. I love the image of floating fire ant balls. God help you if you're swimming near one of those--I'd rather take my chances with the alligators.

Make no mistake: as we watch our fellow citizens drown, starve, and die in the street in New Orleans, its not incompetence or lack of planning that is killing them. It is willful neglect. It is the direct result of reducing the government "down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub." This is what "starving the beast" looks like.
For some 30 years the Republican party has packaged humanity's darkest and most craven weaknesses and pawned them off as its greatest virtues. Well, the reckoning is here and the conservatives are found wanting. When the chips are down we are a nation that cares for our citizens and we expect our government to be strong enough, capable enough, and compassionate enough to do the same.
