Apr. 21st, 2013 09:59 amI'm trying to express a concept that is commonly on my mind, and frequently the subject of this journal, and is maddeningly lacking from search engine queries:
unintentional anthropogenic habitat
As I have said before, every human change to the environment inadvertently destroys some habitat while inadvertently creating some new habitat. We tend to notice it when the habitat we create favors species that we don't like, such as cockroaches, rats, and so on. We often neglect to notice the neutral or positive species that come to unintentional anthropogenic habitats, like the antlions that seem to spontaneously appear along buildings under eaves, or herons attracted to sewer outflows. Or, to bring this to my point of inspiration, the huge crabs in the drainage ditch along the road here in Antigua.
I was just looking at my post from April 20 2009, and while it was exactly the same time of year, at that time it was very very dry. This week it has rained every day, sometimes quite heavily. The drainage ditch along the roadsides (serious road hazards if you are driving and not paying close attention) were bone dry every other time I've seen them. A short while ago I saw them and they were full of rainwater and leaves. And two big armored and well armed animals. Pictures forthcoming, sorry to tease, but vacationing family beckons!
