I don't know why, but I love pictures of decaying structures. Very nice.

Are they taking donations to fix it up? That site's not clear.

I don't think so. I think they are trying to get approval and funding from state/federal authorities to rebuild it.

It says you can donate funds specifically to the footbridge though?

They are probably looking for funding for the campaign.

Yeah, it's only a bridge by definition, not anywhere by function anymore... I had thought they'd at least started fixing it up, since town meeting approved and assigned $$ to it. Then again, the politics around rebuilding it are fierce. I hate politics!

[identity profile] urbpan.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
What are the politics involved? It occurred to me looking at it today, that the cops would be annoyed that pedestrians could cut through without being chased by cruisers, if it were re-opened.

I think the biggest issues were raised by the neighborhood on the other side of the bridge. Part of them wanted it re-opened to have easy access to the park and the medical area, and because it's an eyesore. Another part, of course, wanted it demolished because it's an eyesore. And definitely not re-opened because they would get all kinds of people wander through their neighborhood (read: homeless people, guys using crossbike track nearby, etc).
I forget about the details, but remember that the Tab (local newspaper) had back-and-forths for a while.

[identity profile] maybethecat.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] cottonmanifesto.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)

What she said. The flood never reached it, but I liked the way it looked in the rain.
