I went down this alley on Tuesday, to check out what lived there. (about a block from Fenway Park)

From left to right:
1) Tree of heaven Ailanthus altissima sapling--many of these, and the mature trees in the alley picture are these as well.
2) Unknown shrub sapling. Anybody recognize it?
3) Broadleaf plantain Plantago major.

And then these, top to bottom:

4) Not sure. Probably mugwort Artemesia vulgaris.
5) Milkweed Asclepias syriaca.
6) Garlic mustard Alliaria petiolata. This is the first year appearance of this biennial plant. I haven't seen it as a pavement weed before, but apparently I'll be seeing it more in the future.

My first thought was elm too.

But I'm from LA, what do I know? ;)

I love this blog btw. Makes me want to bring my camera to work with me.

it's amazing how fast garlic mustard has overswept this area. gardeners who rarely saw it five years have pulled out bagfulls from their gardens this year...

I second the possibly celtus.

That second unknown.. looks like that weedy/invasive geranium I can't remember the name of.
