Movie Review: "Ticks" starring Seth Green and Peter "The other guy from Bosom Buddies" Scolari, 1993.

I wrote this mini review to go on my Netflix profile, but they don't carry it, so I'll share it with you.

Mu favorite subre of horror movie, is the "animal or animals are awoken/go berserk/get mutated and kill off a small group of desperate but determined people." Unfortunately, "Ticks" does not live up to its potential. The idea is wonderful: A group of emotionally disturbed inner city kids go off to the wilderness and discover that its far worse than the city--in fact, the drug problem has made it to the countryside in the form of redneck pot growers accidentally creating giant mutant ticks, with, of all things, plant steroids.

It sounds great, and it is a little fun. But the dialogue sounds as if it was a hastily thrown together rough draft that never was polished into anything resembling normal human conversation. The actors gamely over-emote, but the under-written dialogue trips them up, and they seem to know that Tom Servo, Crow and Mike should be in the corner laughing at them.

The monsters amused me, and creeped out my wife, so I guess it wasn't entirely ineffective. If you want something like this only better, try "Tremors" or even "Kingdom of the Spiders."
