No one is bold enough to crawl out onto the thin ice to save them. Although sometimes students throw large rocks in an attempt to break the ice near the goose or duck making it easier for them to free themselves, and the afternoon sun will weaken the ice allowing them to escape also.
Those who stay overnight, I assume, get gobbled up by the wolves.
I see it as Natures way of getting rid of the fowl that aren’t bright enough to travel south, or at least into the city.
