3:00 snapshot, #115.

Yes, yet more work on the Drumlin Underground fencing.

Disgusting substance of the day: Caterpillar frass. The deer water was full of it today. The waterer is under an apple tree, and there are millions of inchworms and other caterpillars feasting this time of year.

On this day in 365 urban species: English Garden Snail. I haven't seen any of these yet this year, but it's finally warm enough, and rain is predicted for Sunday, so I bet we see them this weekend. This species was probably introduced accidentally, as opposed to the European snails in San Francisco, which were deliberately introduced as livestock. Any of you readers eat snails? Personally, mollusks are not on my menu, but I like the idea of easily raised invertebrate food.

On the way home last night, I found an inchworm on my hat. We let him off in the grass when we were going through the Kelly's Drive-Thru. :)

I love escargot.

Well, mostly I love the garlic butter. The snails themselves function as little more than a socially appropriate vessel to put garlicky goodness into my mouth.

I've seen a bunch of English Garden Snails last week when it was wet out in Somerville, MA. Never heardd of anyone eating them here, but I know that one of my friends in SF goes on snail hunting expeditions around town for culinary purposes.

I haven't tried 'em, but they sell them at all the local grocery stores.

I skipped reading for a while and don't know when the "disgusting substance of the day" started, but I love it. My job and volunteer work provide plenty of that, too, although today mine would be the mess I'm blowing out and hacking up.

Love eating snails and the garlicky goodness. I only ate them other ways on a vacation in Montreal, where they appeared on the menu of every ethnicity of restaurant we visited, except probably the bagel place.

Hi

Hi there...

I just read your piece in the Charles River Review, and though I would stop by to say hello... I also have a piece in this issue (It's "Karma, Dana", if you're interested). Please feel free to pop on over to my LJ -- I take a lot of nature photos as well (http://flickr.com/photos/roseee/).

Congrats on your great piece in CRR...
