I remember a couple of years ago when there was a "maned wolf" sighting somewhere in the U.S. The animal turned out to be a fox with mange.

Why must people always jump to the silliest conclusions with odd-looking animals?

Because it's fun! It's like UFO's - it's way more fun and interesting to the think of the exotic rather than the most likely - and in the case of mangey wolves, grosser - answer. :)
