Have you tried that thing where you hold your nose, keep your mouth closed, and kind of inflate your head with the air in your lungs? That's what I have to do every time I fly, regardless of head-coldedness.
(The one time I flew while congested I literally wept the entire time from the pain in my ear. Fucking excruciating. )
