Not the right year

To think that right up until the end of December I was considering doing another 365 urban species project. I would be better off coming up with 365 words for snow. On the plus side, there were cottontail tracks on the snow on the sidewalk in front of my house this morning.

Speaking of cottontails, did you ever wonder why rabbits have such bright distinctive little tails? Because when they are runing away their tails always look to me like they'd make a great target for any predator chasing them.

Things that make you go hmmmm.

With white-tailed deer, which also have target-like rumps and run away in groups that's supposed to disorient predators and make it more difficult for them to pick one target. With more solitary cottontails I'm not sure that that strategy is analogous. I'll have to look it up.
