No, that level of detail is pretty standard when doing identifications. Identification based on adult genetalia is really common, as it's one of the few traits that's reliably different among closely related species - helps avoid mating with the wrong species.

It can be worse. Many of my flies are identified based on the presence & location of just 2 or 3 hairs on the thorax.
