Our last day on the island started purple and cloudy, and quickly opened up into clear and azure.

Visiting the shoreline made me think of those ancient Rapanui, who had cut down their last giant palm. You wouldn't want to set sail on this water in a wicker raft.

This is part of the structures that form the arificial harbor, Hanga Pika:

Our dog liked to sniff around the shore--be careful, honey!

Our dog and her chosen mate for the moment, resting before the important job of chasing chickens and trucks comes up again.

If you come to Easter Island on a limited budget, you can camp. Bring raingear and be prepared for visiting dogs.

Out in front of the Museum (which was really cool, but we weren't allowed to take pictures) there is this contemporary sculpture.

We went walking near the museum, and I saw the only live pigs I ever saw on the island (pig parts, especially ham, were plentiful).

This little boy was with his mother, who was selling carvings at the edge of the restored sites at the TaHai complex.

Dale lies down to get the best angle for Taka and Andrea.

Famed archaeologist (and Dale's hero) William Mulloy restored this site in 1968. It's one of the most complete restorations of a ceremonial village on the island, and is close to the village and the museum. Mulloy is buried nearby, as well.

A "nicely restored" hare paenga, or house foundation. Poles would have been inserted into the holes in the basalt slabs, and a thatched roof put on. McLaughlin says they were "dwellings for chiefs, priests, and families of high rank." (p.88) This one is about six feet wide at its widest point. The entryway is the tiny crawlhole at the middle left of the picture.

Next: The last of our last full day (two more posts worth, at least)
