Stunning! So it just sends off new bulbs into the air, off the main stalk? Where are they supposed to take root, or do they fall?

From what I can tell from quick and dirty online researc, they drop right there. Not a very distant dispersal, but maybe they don't need that. Flowers and seed can also develop, but apparently those are rare in the north.
