Urban Nature Pictures 5/24

Unidentified mushrooms growing in woodchip mulch in front of a parking garage. It has been dry lately, we woke up to mist burning off in the sunrise, with apparently enough moisture over night to produce some mushrooms.

Another one in another mulched area. Lots of dog poop in this area, which may be what the fungus is feeding on. This is a Coprinus mushroom.

Star-of-Bethlehem. This was almost my picture of the day, but I thought it looked too much like a Christian greeting card.

Just a wild guess from the appearance and where it's growing, I'd take a stab at the mystery mushrooms of being some flavor of Armillaria, quite possibly Armillaria Mellea. There was quite a bit of trouble down here a few years ago when a popular wood chip supplier ended up distributing product with honey fungus in the mix. Apparently people were a bit upset with the delivery of root rot with their wood chips.

That had occurred to me, but I didn't know they could grow on wood chips! Thanks for the suggestion. I should grab one tomorrow for a spore print and closer examination.

Seems like as long as it contains bark chips, it'll grow, from skimming through some of the academic papers online.
