Black-crowned night-heron* in the Muddy.


Turtle in Ward's Pond. I'm uncertain if this is a painted turtle or a pond slider. Seems a bit big for a painted.


*The BCNH is one of my top 8 "what the hell is that?" urban animals.

It's a red-ear. You can just barely see the red patch behind the eye. Well, that and the fact that red-ears have a much more rugose shell than painted turtles. (I kept both species as pets for a while. Can you tell?)

I just flipped back to your "what the hell is THAT" list, only to be confronted by the flatworm. Ugh. These things kept dropping off of some rocks we were moving recently and sliming themselves to my arms. Yuck.

I saw my first BCNH last weekend. It was by a stream behind our local "Whole Foods" type market where people told us you can see lots of birds.

It was pretty big and not shy at all. I think people feed him. . .
