Getting from Penzance to Wales was a simple matter of crossing half the country on narrow tunnels through the trees. Quite beautiful if you aren't thinking about the inches of clearance between your car, oncoming traffic, and the wall on the other side (solid shoulder, I believe they called it). As British understatement and subtlety appears to extend to road signage, we got lost again. Whilst trying to find a place to turn around we blundered into Dartmoor (or perhaps someplace else--need to check that one with Dad. Anyway, carry on!)

We pulled into a little rest area type place where taciturn locals eyed us suspiciously.

Green and misty is how I like it.

Also the moss and lichens like it.

I believe I'm seeing crustose lichens growing on foliose lichens here.

Places like this knock me off-kilter.

The sodden valleys of southwest England have been described as 'temperate rainforest'. This has been a dry-ish summer: after a wet one, they can be really lush.

In case you didn't know (since you don't say), the songbird is a Chaffinch.

Thanks! :)

I didn't know this morning when I posted it, but I consulted an expert on British birds in order to identify it (apparently one of the commonest garden birds here, like asking to identify a titmouse back home).
