I took these pictures and then later understood more about the place. I could edit the lot of them and then reorganize them in a more educational order, but I'll save that for my powerpoint presentation for work. Enjoy them in their relatively raw state:

This was the view out my dorm room. The students and professors would gather back here after classes and meals to socialize (and smoke cigarettes). First thing in the morning this area would be full of grazing rabbits--there is one in the background of this picture, behind the yellow line.

One of the pest issues at Durrell is the presence of feral polecats (domestic ferrets). This box is a tracking tunnel--one of the students' projects was to try different substances in the tunnel to measure numbers of ferrets (ink, clay, etc.) How did the project turn out, Mary?

I just found this idea fascinating. I like the idea of a zoo as a gathering place for the community. This would never fly at my zoo, as it is partially State funded.

All good advice. Nice to know we aren't the only ones with a fridge that's too cold in the back.

Young tortoises in a captive breeding program.

Marked with paint to identify individuals.

Keeping crickets is not a haphazard activity at Durrell.

Bare bones skink husbandry. It's actually a more complete set-up than I've seen for a lot of herp cages. Mulch substrate, pipe split lengthwise for a hide, and a sheet of newspaper to approximate leaf litter. Keep the temperature and humidity at the right level and provide the right food and you've got breeding conditions.

Jill Key, the director of the course describing the husbandry of these animals.

Some of the animals in the recovery program are Monserrat galliwasps, a skink species whose man-made troubles (habitat loss, introduced predators) were suddenly made much worse a few years ago when the volcano erupted.

Outside were the tortoises that were too big for the indoor enclosures.

A crowd gathered to look at the meerkats. I was surprised that the zoo had so many adult visitors, unsupervised by children.

The zoo is on the grounds of an old estate, and many of the original buildings are preserved.

Nice set of pictures. I like the last one especially; the building looks 2-dimensional.
