As they release their spores they deliquesce into black liquid.

Easy to ID, edible, but after collecting and cooking a whole bunch, I did not like the taste and threw them out. 8^p

Mmm, these reliably pop up in my yard around now, and I cook them up for breakfast or lunch. Here are some I photographed the other day.

How do you tell the difference between shaggy mane and inky cap, though?

Look for a ring around the stem and a strand or thread of tissue inside the hollow stem. Collect the mushrooms young and only cook and eat the white parts. They turn into a black inky mess very quickly.

Cool! Thank you!

Shaggy mane has a whiter, shaggier (more floccose) cap, and the cap margin curves toward the stipe when young, making it look completely oval in cross-section. At least that's my observation. This is a genus (actually several unrelated genera) that I have not eaten. Too many opportunities to confuse things with the alcohol inky which would ruin my average week.

Tom Volk's page on Coprinus mushrooms is pretty great: http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/may2004.html

Okay, after looking at his page, those are definitely what I have. So from now on I'll just call it shaggy mane instead of "shaggy mane or maybe inky cap"

I never heard the word "deliquesce" before. I love new words. Thanks.

I've never seen it in any other context (coprinus mushrooms) nor does it have any good synonyms.
