The chicken is getting better.

A few months ago Alexis stopped by this grocery store in Jamaica Plain and found it charming and useful. They cater to a Latin American and Caribbean clientele, carrying items like Dulce de Leche candy, chorizo and Mexican cheeses, Goya everything and cheap espresso packed into vacuum blocks. She told me about it and I made it a habit to stop by weekly and buy candy and (sorry) chicken necks for the dogs. It's been there for 50 years, how did I miss it the past 23 I've lived in Boston? Recently we discovered that it is closing to be replaced with a Whole Foods. I took this picture after I stopped there for what will probably the last time. The produce section was bereft of plantains and cactus leaves, and the aisles were crowded with shoppers trying to make the most of the 10% discount on everything but cigarillas. I grabbed a jug of pineapple juice, a bottle of hot sauce, two packages each of chicken and turkey necks, some coffee, and some packs of dried plantain chips.

That completely sucks. I hate Whole Foods. I hate every self-satisfied, expensive inch of it.

Also, I really love Goya stuff. We get Goya rice by the 20-lb bag; my husband liked Goya malt soda, and I like Goya coconut milk. And, of course, Goya beans.

Aw, hell, it's /closing/? That's sad. I stopped by occasionally for, well, random useful things. Bah.

That's too bad. Replace a longstanding local business that's (in theory) useful to everyone, and replace it with something only the rich can afford.

Go America.

That's a handsome chicken :)

Sorry about your grocery store. We're lucky in Tucson to have plenty of such stores AND to be able to buy yucca and plantain and napolitos and Mexican candy and such in the mainstream stores.
