Stuff outiside in PR
Jan. 2nd, 2012 04:50 pmMy dad likes lighthouses, so I found one on the map: Punta Tuna. We followed yet another tiny winding road to a locked gate: the lighthouse was closed for the holiday week. A rough footpath through some scrubby woods along a drainage ditch seemed to go in the right direction, so we took a chance and went. A short while later we found ourselves on a beautiful beach, with this lighthouse overhead.

I couldn't tell for sure, but these birds have the right silhouettes to be boobies.

In the wooded path I found some termite nests. Actually, there are lots of them around everywhere, but I found one low enough to fit in a self-portrait.

I also found several of these handsome purple-clawed devils, apparently known as Coenobita clypeatus.
After seeing Punta Tuna we headed out for the town of Arroyo. On the way we stopped for a soda and a bathroom break. My dad found that the bathroom was already occupied by a chicken when he opened the door.

Then we got to Arroyo, which like everywhere in Puerto Rico, is full of building painted in wonderful colors. Why don't we do this in New England?

City Hall was a little more restrained, but was decked out for Xmas.

As was the city park.

I could do a year-long series on the Doorways of Puerto Rico. So many interesting portals!

The town comes to an edge at a seaport.

We left Arroyo and hit the road again. Turn right at the Great Egret.

We ended up in the second-largest city on the island, Ponce, in the Hotel Melia. (Warning: obnoxious music plays when link is clicked)

We'll pause here, since Ponce deserves at least one whole post of its own.
