One of the woodsy natural areas in Dedham is actually a man-made feature. Mother Brook was the first canal dug in the United States, allowing commerce to flow from the slow-moving Charles down to the Neponset.



It's strange to me that a historic waterway goes right behind people's back yards, with no markers or signage, or any kind of protection or buffer zone.


We access the Brook by way of a parking lot behind the strip mall near our house.


I think there's tremendous potential for Mother Brook to be a great Boston area open space attraction.
