What was it about the millipede picture that disturbed people?

Huh, I've never noticed! I certainly didn't notice in this case since I had my nose about a foot above the surface of the compost. I imagine lots of any animal could result in a distinctive smell. Cockroaches and crickets certainly are distinctive. Millipedes have chemical defenses, so it would make sense that they would have an odor too.

What's it like?

Hmmm - kind of hard to describe. The only thing that comes to mind is it smells like a whole bunch of scabs.
