Okay just ignore this blurry photo of me doing the dishes, not every snapshot is one for the ages. But earlier that day....

Earlier that day the Bird's World staff invited everyone to have lunch in the Butterfly Exhibit (closed for the season). While most of the butterflies had already lived through their life cycle, there were a few stragglers, and of course the Costa's hummingbirds. The hummingbirds produced a chick this year, and it grew up in the butterfly exhibit and is very used to humans being around all the time.

So it would come right up and investigate us. (Actually this may be the mother hummingbird, kind of hard to tell.)

Here's the mother feeding the chick.

One of the zookeepers was good enough to point out to me that one of the spicebushes was infested with some leaf-mining insect. Cool patterns!

A little ways away in another part of the zoo I found these wonderful bird's nest mushrooms--only a little smaller than a real hummingbird nest.
