I confess I don't know much about our kea collection. Beverly Kea was paired with Jean-Luc Kea (and there was a Kirk as well) but I don't know which males are still around. We got a new group with unpronounceable Maori names too. Looking back at this post, it turns out that keas are fan-favorites around here, or they were 5 years ago anyway. Enjoy!

Apparently there are issues with wild keas because they have learned that they like chewing on rubber (like, say, windshield wipers and such), and they've been known to trash cars parked at wildlife areas.

They're cute though. And they look pretty intelligent.

There's a great book on kea by Diamond and Bond -- "Kea: Bird of Paradox." Pricey in this country but I've seen it second-hand.
They are highly intelligent and I believe there used to be a lot of issues trying to keep them in enclosures back home in NZ.
(And Maori words are relatively easy to pronounce, they just look scary.)
