Even with the lousy iPod camera, the prairie dogs are pretty photogenic.

Too bad it's not the 6:55 snapshot, huh?

Are those burrows naturally dug, or part of the exhibit? Just curious, from an operational standpoint-- if there's a need to catch up an animal, how would one go about it when the animal in question can hide effectively? We don't have that problem with the birds, so I wondered.

Those are dug by the prairie dogs. Catching up the animals is a challenge--they have to feed them in traps which are permanently blocked open. They set the traps to catch when they need to catch the animals up.

I see! Thanks for the info, I had wondered if it was something like that. My only experience is with free-flight aviaries, which is equally a challenge.

As far as I know, that's how we do it in our free-flight aviaries, too.
