Back in April of 2010 I went to Fannie Stebbins Wildlife Refuge. My post from that trip included the following photograph, of an unidentified plant that I thought might be related to lady's thumb.

"If you haven't already ID'd that as Polygonum virginianum -- Jumpseed, then I am pointing you to look there. I regularly encounter this plant in the shady, wooded areas of the park near my house here in Baltimore City. See: http://milwaukeeriveradvocates.org/?cat=10 - Tom of Baltimore"

That message was in my email this morning. Thanks Tom!

I like the fact that LiveJournal posts are up forever. I celebrate my 10th anniversary here this year--someone suggested that I duplicate the journal somehow, in case the KGB or whoever knock it offline entirely some day. Anyone else done this, or know how it might be done?

I carried all my entries over to Dreamwidth and post/cross post from there. There are also tools to download things to your own computer but I don't know how well they work.

inre: backing the journal.

I was able to pull all of my LJ posts into my own wordpress blog, which then autoposts anything new to LJ.

Long ago, I sucked my journal into one I made at http://www.dreamwidth.org. Dreamwidth is based on the same code as Live Journal, so it was really easy.

I suggest you check it out.

===I crosspost from Dreamwidth (http://www.dreamwidth.org/ ), and I believe they have a backup/migration tool there. (It has been a while since I did it, I assume it still works.) This is run by folks that used to work for LJ who decided they liked the platform and keep improving it.

I use XJournal. It has a "History" function that allows you to download all your posts. I don't know if it grabs photos, though.

Another person chiming in about the Dreamwidth migration/crosspost thing. Works really well, I'm told - except for when LJ is malfunctioning and won't let the software access it - but it keeps trying. It keeps the access categories and stuff. However, even for paid accounts there is still only rudimentary picture hosting (via the post by e-mail function) so you'd have to post all the pics on Photobucket. IIRC you often have them actually on LJ?

I USED to edit everything on photoshop then upload it to photobucket and post via html, but my new laptop won't let me use photoshop, so I've been trying to edit with iPhoto with some success, then uploading directly to LJ.
