Giant pinned beetle! This is at the monstrous mountaintop Getty Center. We walked through and looked at some of the art, but we were really more interested in the grounds of the place, which are well worth the 15 dollar parking. (15 dollar parking, but free train ride, museum admission, and admission to the grounds!)

This is part of a massive cactus garden.

There is some truly fantastic landscape architecture there.

The tree-like structures in the background are iron frames with bougainvillea vines in them. (Good pic here)

Looking down through the leafless trees at the garden path. It must look very different in summer. I thought there weren't any seasons here?

One of the views from the tram ride to the complex shows the iconic LA freeway traffic.

A little earlier, we went to downtown LA because my brother was very keen to see the Bradbury Building.

It's the oldest office building in the city, and the open layout and beautiful stairwells and elevators have made it a staple of Hollywood. My brother's interest derived mainly from its inclusion in Bladerunner.

Dad rests on a bench with an old friend.
