Southern California

Downsides:

1. Housing, fuel, other things very expensive.
2. 150 years overdue for massive earthquake that will kill =/- 2000 people and throw the area into chaos and misery for weeks if not months (it will be like Katrina but with fire and collapsed buildings and Mad Max style street battles for fuel).
3. Frequent fires (no bonfires in the back yard anymore).

And water. Don't forget that SoCal is almost totally dependent on imported water.

(See Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower for southern California dystopia, though it didn't need an earthquake to get there.)

San Diego seems like a nice city. Good weather, it's not as seismically active as LA and I think it's probably cheaper. Plus they have a really nice zoo.

Yup, yup, and YUP. So now I'm in PA.

And also, really weird politics and constant battles over tax rates and education. (That's what landed us in MD rather than in San Diego.)

What I've heard from friends in Southern CA is that they really, really miss the changing of the seasons ... one so much so that she moved back to New England. Apparently, unrelenting bright & sunny gets on one's nerves over time. Who knew?

I'm willing to take that risk. Plus I couldn't help noticing that the deciduous trees in Los Angles seemed to be missing their leaves in February.

Yeah, but tomorrow in the middle of March I'm going to the beach...

Also, you know you live in Southern California when you've never had a snow day, but you've had a week off for fires.

Yeah I didn't list the "pros" because they are too obvious and the list is too long.
