So I have no choice but to accept that there is not a forty dollar market for my product. I know that there are people out there that would like to go on a walk of Boston and learn about the living things that surround them. They just don't want to pay forty bucks for it.

After some soul searching, I decided that it is still worth doing, and in fact it is worth documenting. I've sort of fallen in love with the phrase "Urban Nature Walk" after saying it so often, and I've decided to keep it. I almost decided to change "The Urban Pantheist" to "Urban Nature Walk," but "...Pantheist" has a life of its own now.

I'd have a lot to answer for if I made that change, from the charge of "dumbing down," to the apparent loss of the spiritual side of the magazine.

I am going to continue to lead urban nature walks, and I am going to edit a zine called "Urban Nature Walk." Here's my vision: a small group of amateur naturalists and dedicated enthusiasts will go together on a series of walks, discussing and learning from one another, and documenting the experience with photographs, essays and whatever other way they want. I then edit the documentation into a magazine, "Urban Nature Walk." Right now I see it as one magazine per walk, about bimonthly or quarterly.

I pitched the idea to Alexis and to my astonishment she thought it was a good idea. She has brought so much to UrbPan that I can't imagine doing it without her. I'm asking a lot of my partner to take on another one of my project ideas. I only hope I can make it up to her and support her creativity as well as she has done for me.

I haven't set a date for the first Urban Nature Walk, but I'm imagining that November will be the first time I'm organized enough. I do know that I want to walk along the Muddy River, from where it empties into the Charles upstream to its origin at Jamaica Pond. Depending on the pace, and the strength of the participants it may take more than one session. It most likely would occur on a Sunday. Let me know, kind LiveJournal reader, if you would like to participate. The cost is free.
