3:00 snapshot #1265: yard work and yard creatures

I don't know if "yard work" is really the right way to put it. I'm dismantling an ancient rotten pallet to use as firewood. But there are creatures up ahead:



A pair of robins is working on a nest in one of the Norway maples in the way back of the yard.


A European paper wasp gathers some pulp from a clothes pin to help build a nest--SOMEWHERE. If I find it on my property I'll remove it, but so far they aren't building in the usual places.

And I know I promised a better picture for the beetlemaniacs trying to identify this species, but this is pretty terrible. But this shows the beveled pronotum area, which should narrow it down. (I hope?)

The dog is great... contemplating life's great mysteries.

Take off a bunch from the bottom and a little from the right, and that clothesline picture is so fascinating to me that I wouldn't even notice the wasp.
