First slime mold of the year!
I saw these little guys from a long way off--they looked almost traffic cone orange! This is wolf's milk slime mold
Lycogala epidendrum
.
Little cushions look smooth from a distance but are textured close up.

Is THAT what that is? I've heard a couple colloquial names, but I didn't realize that it was a slime mold.

Indeed! Wolf's milk and dog vomit are the two slime molds I can guarantee I'll see every year.

It's awfully pretty for a slime mold. And ... has more form than I'd expect a slime mold to have. I imagine slime molds as being all slithery.
