Ciara Camel lays in her yard. She's not much bothered by yellow jackets but her keepers are; that's why I'm here checking it out. It seems like they're just attracted to the sunny wooden barn wall and the manure--I can't find a nearby nest.

This oak stump at Stone Zoo was already hosting a truly heroic Ganoderma applanatum/a> fungus which produces semicircular bracket mushrooms 18 inches across, and now some Omphalotus illudens fungi has produced impressive fruits from its roots.

This mushroom species causes the majority of mushroom poisonings in the Northeast. Actually, to be fair, wishful thinking causes the majority of mushroom poisonings in the Northeast. Overzealous chanterelle hunters collect jack-o-lantern mushrooms (all Omphalotus species are orange, bioluminescent to some extent, and poisonous, earning a fairly stable and logical common name). Chanterelles do not typically grow in such crowded clusters, never have such sharp edged gills, and don't grow directly from dead wood. Jacks reportedly taste just fine, but cause some powerfully unpleasant digestive effects. It's okay to enjoy mushrooms for their beauty, whether or not they are edible.

wow, those are totally gorgeous mushrooms!

also a beautiful ungulate :)

i found some shaggy manes today, am waiting until tomorrow to harvest them -- hope they haven't gone all inky by then! (most of the fruitbodies struck me as still very small, so i'm giving them a day to grow, but you know how fast Coprinus can turn...)

Risky gamble! Maybe you'll get some delicious mushrooms (never had them myself) maybe you'll get a black puddle!
