I keep trying to get grocers to switch their cheap storeroom "shelving" from upturned milk cartons to those cement blocks -- stood on end though -- with a piece of wood spanning their distance.
In a food storage setting, that's exactly what a series of turned-over milk cartons is. I once saw a cat sitting next to a milk carton watching a mouse underneath it eating through the bag of day-old bread on top of the milk carton. Plus the floors under the milk cartons are always dirty. At least with the cinder blocks spaced out every 4-6 feet, with the shelf on top, you can stand in the aisle and get the broom and mop all the way to the wall to clean underneath.
Many of our buildings have cinderblock walls which are not capped at the top, and frequently have very coarse utility penetrations (ahem) which allow pest access. Thus my hatred.
