If I don't write these things down they will not happen.

I'm giving up sweets again this year, mainly to avoid compulsively eating whatever garbage my coworkers put on the desk nearest mine. Cookies, candy, donut holes, cinnamon bread, it's been a constant stream of sugary crap all year but climaxing with the Halloween/Xmas vortex. The last sweets I ate off that desk were some stale anise cookies (which I don't really love even when fresh) that I had to power through in order to chew and eat them. It's ridiculous.

I'm giving up fried potatoes for the year, since I actually love fried potatoes and I could take or leave sweets. I had french fries with almost every meal on my trip with my dad and I could see myself get fatter with every selfie.

I intend to hold to being vegetarian on Thursdays. Seems pretty stupid since I was veg 7 days a week for 15 years, but it's so damn easy to eat meat. It's fatty and salty, and it's already cooked and edible, unlike plants, which are bitter and tough and awful until you cook them in butter and salt. So yeah, meat-free Thursdays, which will coincide with yoga class. I actually don't feel like eating meat (or drinking booze) after doing yoga. It probably releases the same feel-good endocrine system dope that meat and booze do.

Yes I should probably do something to moderate my alcohol intake. Not on the list this year.

I should also go to the doctor for a regular check-up. Haven't done that in several years. They will likely tell me to do all of the above, plus knock out the drinking. I really need that albuterol fix, and maybe they'll give me some of those sweet anti-dementia drugs before it's too late.

Stay healthy everyone!

That was just the reason why I decided to stop eating meat two years ago... just for the sake that it is SO easy to eat it. It´s everywhere and in every possible meal. Why?, I asked myself and started to get it out of the system.
Back then I decided that I´d actually eat meat if it was "worth it"... meaning something I really like and crave at that moment. After that I found out how rarely I really wanted anything "meaty".

I'm off work food again this year for the same reason. I was totally successful during 2012 but 2013 was a free for all in terms of stuffing my pie hole with every piece of crap that was laying around the office. Good luck to you.

If you can hands down GIVE UP a food for a year then I"m impressed. Especially something you love.. I would advice for almost anyone to moderate it--only fried potatos on fridays, for example. Or "only one "sweet thing" a day" (be it a piece of hard candy, or a cookie, or a slice of cheese cake) ... in my experience, it's a lot easier to cut back then go cold turkey... and if forces you to think about things more "If I eat this thing now, I can't have anything else Iater today." .. and it will ensure that what you eat is what you enjoy, and not just being eaten because it's there. Plus, being able to go "I can have it tommorow" makes it far more unlikely that you'll break one day, and snowball terribly into Christmas from there :) The same applies to fried potatoes, of course :) But of course, you are far more aware of what you are capable of doing then I am :) But that's the advice I'd give almost anymore in your position. :)

On another note, if you're worried about your weight, you could try keeping up with your food intake. Most of the time, it's not the side of french fries that makes us fat, so much as it's the fact that we're served a HUGE serving of them, along with a pile of meat and cheese that's really about 2 or 3 servings in one, but all served to us on one plate like it's one meal. Especially in a restaurant. Anyway, There are websites, like myfitnesspal dot com that will help you keep up with what you're eating. I presume you have a smart phone like most people these days.. if so, many of those websites have mobile phone apps so you can keep track while you're on the go. I recomend EVERYONE spend a few weeks doing this, honestly. Keeping track of what you're eating makes you a lot more aware of WHAT you're eating, and how much of it you are eating.. and, once one makes an account, they have a GIGANTIC library of food you can search in (including stuff from restaurants) and you can set up commonly eaten meals (for example, I have a favorite sandwich I eat a lot .. .I built it once, saved it, and then can say "I ate this" with only a couple clicks) ... It takes a bit to set up, but once you get it set up, it's easy to keep up with. But, I recomend EVERYONE do this for two or three weeks simply to increase awareness of what they're eating, and when. Most people I know who have done this--myself included--start making more conservative food eating choices when they start keeping track of what goes in their mouth. :)

ANyway, just a though.

If nothign else, the goal of giving up sweets and friend potatos is an admirable one and I wish you all the luck :D

Oh and DO go to the doctor! Infact, instead of saying "I should" make an appointment tommorrow morning! don't put it off!

Thanks for that!

I'm very compulsive, and previous attempts to moderate have failed. In 2011 I did successfully give up sweets for the year. I allow myself to eat desserts that are mostly fruit, and I don't count drinks. I really don't care about cookies and candy, and yet I eat a ton just because they're in arms reach. If I just give myself the rule that I can't eat any, then I won't. If I give myself the rule that I can eat some under some conditions, the whole thing falls apart.

Portion control is very wise, and I have been working on that one. Trying not to have seconds--even if there's "plenty!" (I hate to waste food) and saving leftovers for lunch has been helping.

I understand that. I'm pretty compulsive myself. I can't buy candy anymore because the knowledge that it's in the house means I muuuust eat it. I have a thing of mini candy bars (about 10 or so) that my friend gave me for christmas (it came in a pretty tin and money's tight all around this year so it isn't a lame gift!) and I"m pretty proud that I still have several of them despite me opening it about 2 weeks ago (we had Christmas early).. ... normally it's a very strong impulse.. I was speaking to a friend of mine who had diagnosed OCD, and we were describing the same thing. ANd I have a few 'ocd' traits (though I don't claim to have 'OCD' in any significant fasion... just incredibly mild impulses regarding numbers of objects and organization... ) ... so, I definetly understand what you mean!

The fact that you don't care about cookies and candy's pretty helpful, I love chocolate and stuff too much to give it up XD I"d only succeed if I limited myself. :) I *still* think you shoudl limit your tater intake, rather then completly deny, but I"m also rather hedonistic like that XD I wish you all the luck in the world, though :)

And leftovers are delicious <3 I love left overs!

While I agree with alexis's sentiments, Im kinda with you on the fried potato thing... not so much as a principle, but just in the sense that, with being on the road ALL the time, I am trying not to eat them as a simple meal filler, and stick to only eating them when they are something special (big chunky tater wedges? sure! stringy soggy fast food fries? nah, I'll just get the horrible for me sammich today, thanks) or if I'm majorly craving them, cuz why deprive myself all the time?

I'm not sure if your "fried potatos" also includes chips, but that wont be an issue for me, I gave them up in a fit of healthy eating nearly 10 years ago. I still eat tortilla chips, and occasionally I'll have a handful of tater chips if I'm at a party or cookout, but I dont actively seek them out, refuse them if they come with meals, and really, don't miss them at all anymore. I'm hoping I can similarly wean myself off of fries.

Good luck!

Sweets are evil, but so tasty and I should follow your example and just stop it all!! I couldn't give up the spuds tho...

I'm sort of like you with the doctor thing..I only go when I'm half dead..(had to go this week cos I have a raging sinus infection of doom).......did the same with the dentist(even tho he is the best ever) I didn't get a cleaning for 5 years and the hygienist said the teeth weren't bad at all....no cavities at all...

I just don't like it anymore.....grumble grumble...
