We were allowed to visit Maggie last night. She was really doped up on painkillers, was wearing an inflatable donut (instead of a lampshade), and had a catheter taped to her foreleg. Alexis could tell instantly that Maggie needed to urinate. We took her out and she peed a gallon, and then tried walking us back to our old house (which is only a couple blocks from the vet office).

This is the shoelace that was in her, from her stomach to her small intestine. It's a lace from a relatively new pair of shoes of mine--we remember when we discovered she had eaten it. I was annoyed because they were new shoes and I was going to wear them to the airport very soon (instead of boots that are difficult to get on and off at security). But it turned out we had replacement laces in the house and Alexis put them in for me. That was about 6 weeks ago, but her symptoms only started less than 2 weeks ago.

Her incision is the entire length of her abdomen. There is an incision in her stomach and 2 in her small intestine. The staff were surprised that she didn't seem to want to bother her staples. She's gone through having staples before--both of her knees were operated on several years ago.

We're hoping we can take her home today.

(Sorry for the cornball music, but I just got the Hot Tub Time Machine soundtrack, and this seemed most appropriate.)

aw poor maggie. i hope recovery treats her well. one of my dogs accidentally swallowed this plastic piece that came out of a food ball (swallowed it with the kibble) and it was small -- maybe the size of a nickel. but it caused him to throw up a ton and he had to have it removed…thankfully, it was still in his stomach and not in his intestines. the vet had said once things reach the intestines, they become a lot more complicated.

i remember him having a pretty big incision and being surprised at how quickly he bounced back (and he was 10.5-11 years at the time!). i hope maggie is able to come home today.

When I was a tech, there were a few "frequent fliers" on the intestinal foreign body surgery table.

So sad for you all *mails you 100 lbs of bison steaks*

Would keeping a few bowls of uncooked spaghetti around prevent dogs from eating laces? It is grasslike and comes in spinach flavor.

Oh, poor Maggie! I hope she's home soon! We have a cat who did that. Ate sewing thread, one end of which wrapped around the base of his tongue, and the other went down his gut. Essentially, it became kinda like a drawstring, and the surgery to remove it removed a lot of money from our wallets. I have to be extremely vigilant to make sure he doesn't get ahold of anything threadlike, which is a pain, since I sew and knit and such, but anything beats having to pay a bill like that, not to mention the heartache!
Isn't it funny how THEY train US?

So happy Maggie is feeling better. Maybe you should think about buying velcro footwear from now on.

With all the weird crap that Puddle eats, I'm sure this is going to be in my future. I'm surprised it hasn't happened already. I do my best to keep all his vices (socks, towels, gardening gloves, etc.) out of reach, but he still manages to get ahold of them occasionally. :/

Get well soon, Maggie! I love those donuts. Brilliant invention.

Thank goodness or whatever it didn't do her more harm. This was bad enough! Glad she is home now.
