I carry my camera around with me at work to document field work that I'll need to prioritize. First thing Monday AM I should probably deal with this bald-faced hornet nest, built on an air conditioner right by a door.

We have, or had, one of those on an eave of the house. Something lopped off the bottom of the next and I could see those white things. What are those? The next day, after I sprayed the nest, I noticed they were all gone. I wondered if other hornets carried them off, or if birds ate them, in which case I feel really bad about spraying the nest.

The white things are the larvae or pupae of the wasps. In the above picture they are capped pupal cells. Right after you spray a nest like this, usually some dead larvae fall out. I would guess that's what happened to yours.

Probably if there was enough insecticide to affect the birds still on the nest, the birds wouldn't feed on it. I'm just guessing, based on the powerful odor of the petroleum distillates and such.

Thanks! I love how much I learn about my own backyard from you. :-)
