We ate at the Dedham Diner, which was decorated with children's crayon drawings. One child had quoted Michael Pollan.

Over in the supermarket, some con artist is trying to sell bird seed by putting cherry scent on it. (Songbirds have very poor senses of smell, and do not orient to food by olfaction.)

It's for the humans, the same reason they put fragrance in cat litter. Most cats hate fragranced litter, but humans have some strange (and incorrect) belief that if the litter smells like flowers somehow the cat poop wont smell as bad. (FWIW, I only buy the unscented varieties for my cats.)

I am curious how birds do orient to food. I was actually wondering this just a couple days ago. I knew birds had minimal sense of smell but they never seem to have trouble finding my feeders even when I move them often to thwart the other critters.

Maybe it's supposed to smell nice for the humans when they put it out for the birds.

My question is: why cherry? Very strange....
