These are hop marks made by a rat moving quickly through very deep snow. Note the marks made by the tail keeping balance as the animal propels itself using mainly its back feet.

I thank my lucky stars I have NOT seen tracks like that. Have seen predator tracks (cat? fox?) around so if anything like a rat shows up, it's toast.

Those tracks are pretty great. I know that rats like the one that made these tracks are "vermin," but I can't help but be impressed by their resilience.

I totally agree! Rats and humans have been challenging one another for many years. I often tell people that besides the primates and maybe some parrots, they're the smartest animals in the zoo.
