I just found his records on my coworker's desk. He was being kept as a pet and was surrendered because he was having serious health issues (not eating, vomiting) when he was four to five weeks old.

what the hell was he doing away from his mother at 4-5 weeks old, let alone before that, which it must have been, for them to have observed "eating problems"? At that age, a fox would just be STARTING on a bit of a solid diet, still nursing to some extent, wouldn't it??
Second the GAH. Add an ARGH.

How old is he? Where's he from? A couple years ago I knew a little black fox kit who'd been surrendered by his kidnappers.

The one I knew was born in 2003 in Ohio. So, probably not the same. Would have been funny, though.
The Ohio Wildlife Center had two little fox babies at the same time. The black one who was unreleasable, and a red one who was going to be fostered and released. They weren't there long (we were more of a short-term facility), but it was SO hard not to play with them. Very puppy-like. But if one of them had bitten someone...bad things would have happened.

what kind of idiots would keep a fox as a pet? some humans use up too much air.

That's kinda what I was afraid of. When I worked at the museum in Philly, we had a *beautiful* female red fox that had also been kept as a pet -- stolen from her den and all. Poor thing. She thought she was a dog. Walked on a harness, knew "sit" and a few other commands that escape me. Her big problem was zoomies -- she tore around her enclosure at mach 9, often running partially up the sides of the fencing. Since she was kept in the general mammal room, she needed a double enclosure to ensure that the rabbits kept directly across from her would stay safe.

People suck.
