A major wind storm blew through today, wreaking havok on "Bird Hill," our raptor exhibits.

This was the first one we became aware of. This rather large tree uprooted, split at the base, and toppled toward a red-tailed hawk cage, getting hung up in another tree. The wind continued to blow, and the tree looked as if it might fall the rest of the way, and crush the cage below:

We hurried to move the red-tail, and the screech owl in the adjacent cage, off-exhibit. A couple hours later the tree indeed did fall. The tree it fell against prevented it from hitting the cage.

Another tree fell, just missing this vacant cage.

And then another tree fell directly onto another cage, badly damaging it. Fortunately, the pheasant inside wasn't injured, and it didn't escape through the hole the tree left. We took the pheasant off-exhibit, too. Quiet zone!

Another big branch knocked out the electric fence wire at the deer enclosure--but since another tree had taken out all the power to the sanctuary, it didn't make any difference. The power cable across the street closed the road, too.
Hopefully tomorrow will be a more normal day.
