Hey, can't you eat those? Or is it only the giant variety? (I know nothing about mycology; I just remember reading that somewhere.)

You certainly wouldn't want to eat them in that stage. Many species of puffball (including, yes, the ones in that picture) are edible. Some are most definitely not.

Don't worry, I'm not going to start wandering around eating strange mushrooms after reading about them in a novel (or even an edible plant book). ;)
